Tokyo International Viola Competition Announces 2025 Winners
Held every three years since 2009, the 6th Tokyo International Viola Competition recently came to a close at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and Nippon Steel Kioi Hall.
Chaired by Ryo Sasaki, the jury comprised Masao Kawasaki, Máté Szücs, Hsin-Yun Huang, Sangjin Kim, Lars Anders Tomter, and Dimitri Murrath. The honorary presidents of the jury were Antoine Tamestit and Nobuko Imai, who founded the competition in 1992.

Emad Zolfaghari Wins Top Prize at 2024 Primrose International Viola Competition
Congratulations to Curtis viola student and Elaine W. Camarda and A. Morris Williams Jr. Fellow Emad Zolfaghari, who has been named winner of the first prize and audience prize in the 17th Primrose International Viola Competition, presented by the Colburn School and the American Viola Society. Mr. Zolfaghari, who performed Bela Bartók’s Viola Concerto to rapturous applause during the final competition round, will receive $15,000, along with an invitation to perform at the 2026 American Viola Society Festival and an invitation to the semi-finals of the Concert Artists Guild Competition.

Violist Emad Zolfaghari won first prize in this year's competition
The 17th Primrose International Viola Competition, presented by The Colburn School and the American Viola Society, recently came to a close at Colburn School’s Zipper Hall. Featuring the world's best and most promising young violists, all live rounds are now available for playback on The Violin Channel.
Canadian Emad Zolfaghari has been named the first-prize winner and will receive $15,000. Emad will also receive an invitation to perform at the 2026 American Viola Society Festival and an invitation to the semi-finals of the Concert Artists Guild Competition. He also won the Audience Prize after members of the audience voted for their favorite competitor in the Final Round.
